Why Super Mario Bros Games Have Remained Immensely Popular
In an industry known for fast-paced action and eye-popping graphics, each new entry seeks to out-perform and out-sell its rivals. Surprisingly, one of the most successful of them all is not based on complex warfare or space invaders, but a couple of innocent-looking, chubby cartoon-style characters. Super Mario Bros games remain one of the best-selling video game franchises, and will soon exceed sales of two-hundred fifty million units worldwide.
Introduced in the fall of 1985, these appealing characters were responsible for helping to rescue the nascent gaming industry, which was approaching economic collapse after a period of intense popularity. The release of the strangely named Donkey Kong had proven immensely successful, though marred by copyright struggles. By 1983, however, a glut of poor-quality game cartridges and platforms had soured the buying public, and sales plummeted.
This downturn led many industry forecasters to predict the death of home gaming, but they had underestimated the genius of the developers, who refocused the industry by introducing vastly improved cartridges, and reliable, inexpensive consoles. And, in one masterful stroke, the downward trend was completely reversed by the decision to bundle popular characters with new systems, leading many consumers to buy the new, higher-quality consoles for that reason alone.
Buyers took notice of this trend, the industry exploded, and Super Mario became a household name. Yet, even with huge technical improvements in players and cartridges, many analysts were somewhat puzzled by the initial success of the brothers. After all, they were tubby and cute, almost totally non-threatening in appearance, and their on-screen conflicts were amusing, not ugly and violent.
As history shows, that signature look was an asset. Although bright, colorful, and upbeat, it still appeals to even the most hard core, jaded players, who find them technically satisfying, as well as great fun. The series provides something interesting and entertaining for people of all ages, and the fact that they largely avoid blood and gore makes them appropriate for impressionable children.
Their appeal, however, goes beyond graphic style. When first introduced, the newer technology had created an engrossing, fascinating world that allowed players to navigate in a variety of directions, while running and jumping freely to avoid obstacles or enemies. Enthusiasts could achieve different levels, which was made possible by the introduction of a relatively new platform structure.
The brothers are still having adventures, but more recent versions explore newer realms, and attract new fans. The franchise has created a host of spin-off productions and has been featured in films and on television, in addition to appearing as guests in other games. Their names have become a part of modern life, and people in a variety of countries and cultures recognize them instantly.
The introduction of different game levels opened new vistas, encouraged repeat play, and continues to attract new fans. Super Mario Bros games have proven that their approach worked, helping to re-kindle a struggling segment of the entertainment industry by stressing innovation, reliability, and overall quality. They are still extremely popular, and will remain so for the indefinite future.
